The Company

In response to fluctuating energy prices, HOYTS required a tailored solution that would optimise energy management in its cinemas across Australia and New Zealand.

Avani audited and rolled out a bespoke platform in 59 locations, which centralised existing technology in each building and linked it to the operation of the business itself. Avani delivered a solution that increased productivity, reduced labour and delivered sizeable energy savings for HOYTS.

The Challenge

Rising costs, fragmented processes and a lack of visibility

HOYTS came to Avani, facing millions of dollars in increased electricity costs to run its cinemas.

Avani’s audit also revealed that HOYTS lacked a standardised energy management system. Some cinemas featured automated functionality for lighting and climate control, while others still relied on manual buttons for operation.

HOYTS was also relying on individual people to support each location, who would call contractors to fix minor issues. The chain’s head office had no visibility of these calls or the associated charges until they were invoiced.

At the same time, facilities managers across the industry were being tasked with operating 40-50 different pieces of technology within a single building, in addition to managing the premises and communicating with clients and tenants. The need to solve more problems on an increasing number of devices with less time to do so highlighted the need for an automated building management system, something which HOYTS had not yet rolled out.

Avani's Solution

What we did

Avani initially audited around 45 HOYTS sites across Australia and New Zealand for an effective solution to manage its energy consumption. The proposal was quickly approved and implemented.

Avani first connected its platform to HOYTS’ proprietary database to access exact ticket sales, allowing for automated management of electrical systems, such as lighting and air conditioning, based on occupancy.

The operation of electrical systems and data collection from them was centralised and automated across all HOYTS locations as part of the Avani rollout. This enabled HOYTS to see accurate running costs and directly compare them with the number of tickets sold.

As the implementation of the Avani platform progressed, the opportunity to control electrical systems based on occupancy emerged. Like many large spaces, the air conditioning systems in HOYTS’ cinemas are designed to still operate at their peak on a hot day when the building is crowded.

Avani also utilised geolocation technology to automatically adjust the temperature in the cinema according to its location, the season and the time of day.

Outcomes

Saving energy through innovation in the retail sector

The Avani implementation led to the rollout of a fully automated building management system in 59 HOYTS cinemas across Australia and New Zealand. Avani helped HOYTS to solve many of its energy management challenges, recoup productivity costs and increase visibility of critical data across locations.

HOYTS’ new automated energy management system initially reduced equipment run times by 20%. This was followed by another 15% saving once ticketing data had been integrated.

The Avani platform also provided HOYTS with real-time information on operation and issues, cutting the number of unscheduled maintenance calls by 50% and reducing maintenance staffing headcount by 80%. Employee resources could also be redirected to more impactful work as a result of the partnership with Avani.

In addition to the productivity and efficiency gains, HOYTS also reduced its carbon footprint without impacting customer comfort. The Avani platform helped HOYTS save approximately 2900 tonnes of CO2 per year, cutting total energy consumption by 11% in the process.
